A new study using GlycoCheck from Microvascular Health Solutions, a BioRegenx company, reveals four months after infection with COVID-19, people have endothelial and vascular dysfunction. The paper appears in the European Journal of Heart Failure, with the research having been conducted at Attikon University Hospital and Kapodistrian University in Athens, Greece.
The study titled “Association of COVID-19 with Impaired Endothelial Glycocalyx, Vascular Function and Myocardial Deformation Four Months After Infection” included 70 patients four months after COVID-19 infection, 70 age- and sex-matched untreated hypertensive patients (positive control) and 70 healthy individuals. The study concluded that SARS-CoV-2 may cause endothelial and vascular dysfunction linked to impaired cardiac performance four months after infection.
This study’s results are consistent with another study of COVID-19 using GlycoCheck, “Microvascular dysfunction in COVID-19: the MYSTIC study” which found that up to 95% of the smallest capillaries —the tiniest part of microcirculation—have been severely damaged in patients on mechanical ventilators. And up to 65% of the smallest capillaries have been severely damaged in patients who aren’t on ventilation.
